CHAPTER XII - SABBATICAL FROM REALITY

“Making of unreality a possibility, then a probability, then an incontrovertible fact.” William C. Faulkner (1897 – 1962) was an American writer

In this category the reader is entering prime wishful-thinking territory. The struggle here is about what dismal foolishness is disguisable as a new legal definition, out of which new entitlements can be fashioned. Often skating on thin legal ice or suffering from a periodic lull in cases of merit there is no shortage of day dreaming. As the late Yale law professor Fred Rodell pointed out in 1939: “The legal trade, in short, is nothing but a high-class racket.” As the following cases exemplify there is no shortage of inventive litigants.

ABOUT AUTHOR

Leslie M. Carwell – a resident of Montréal – is the author of this collection.

He boasts very modest experience in journalism in the automotive field and some of his articles have appeared in English, French and German language publications in Canada, Germany, and Switzerland.

He developed his searing judicial insight two decades ago when he was thrown in jail for a traffic accident in the Middle-East and subsequently had to face a blind judge for the “crime” in a Sharia Court.

He has attended law school for 2 years, but it wasn’t to his liking and while debating the pros and cons of a legal education came to the conclusion, that the legal profession was not only overcrowded but also faces a bleak future.

……..If you dare!

Here is a book shedding a quick and bright light on some of the darker corners of the legal system. A collection that will at once amuse, bemuse, and horrify. A great read coupled with top notch research..

Rick Nowlan, Edmonton, AB

Every kind of make-work for our legions of lawyers is covered here: imagined new entitlements, workplace grievances, shakedowns of “deep pocket” defendants, improbable claims of emotional distress, prisoner lawsuits (what else is there to do in the pokey?), litigious compulsives, amateur constitutional scholars.
The author helpfully provides an URL for each case so that you can see the original documents on the internet as PDFs.

John Derbyshire, Huntington, NY

Part of me hopes against hope that each of these stories was just a one-off. Alas, that is not the case. If you like to reflect on life’s absurdities, this is the perfect book for you. It’s both very funny and informative, a rare combination of nothing but the facts.
